One of the perks of working at Mayatan is that the school pays for us to leave the country for three days to renew our tourist visas every three months.
About a month ago they paid for us to go to Belize again for that purpose. Last fall, they sent us to Belize also, but to Punta Gorda (Fat Point). PG was empty, like a ghost town, and I had absolutely no desire to ever go back there so I didn’t know what to expect from this Belize trip.
Well, we arrived in Palcencia, Belize to beautiful white sand beaches, clear water, and tasty food! Quiet a change from Punta Gorda. It was fun to have an extra day off of school, travel with all the teachers to a beautiful place, eat different food, and all paid for by the school!
I haven’t exactly figured out what language they speak in Belize…but here is a sign about littering. They might not speak perfect English, but at least they care about the planet!
One of my favorite things about the trip was where we had to go through customs to leave the country. Above is a picture of just that. The boat we were taking to get back to Honduras (which Allan and I almost missed and would have been stuck in Belize!) intentionally ran aground at a deserted ship yard where a government official drove up in a Mercedes and proceeded to check our passports on the hood of his car with Boyz to Men playing in the background. I don’t know why I was surprised.
